Spain's extra-time win over Argentina did more than decide the 2026 World Cup. Updated U.S. audience figures show the final reaching a scale that changes how broadcasters, sponsors and future hosts can value football in North America.
Key points
- NBCUniversal reported 23.9 million viewers across Telemundo and Peacock.
- The company called it the most-watched soccer match in U.S. Spanish-language media history.
- Combined English- and Spanish-language viewing exceeded 60 million.
Spanish-language coverage set its own record
NBCUniversal reported that 23.9 million viewers watched Spain beat Argentina across Telemundo and Peacock. The company said the final became the most-watched soccer match in the history of Spanish-language media in the United States.
Across all 104 matches, Telemundo's tournament averaged 6.3 million viewers, up from 2.6 million for the 2022 edition. The growth was therefore not limited to one final.
The final crossed language markets
Associated Press reported Fox's English-language audience at 38.937 million and the Spanish-language audience above 23 million. Together, the two broadcasts pushed total U.S. viewing past 60 million.
That scale matters because it gives rights holders evidence that football audiences can be additive across languages rather than split between them.
Boda8 Sport analysis
Analysis: Audience records are most valuable when they change future behaviour. Broadcasters now have a stronger case for simultaneous streaming, culturally specific presentation and longer tournament storytelling.
For a sports platform such as Boda8 Sport, the lesson is direct: regional fans should be served with context that fits their market, not only a duplicated global feed.
